Narendra Sanghvi

Chief Scientific Officer

Mr. Sanghvi is the co-founder of Focus Surgery Inc. and a pioneer in the field of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technology. He is the inventor and developer of the Sonablate® HIFU device for the treatment of prostate disease. He served at the Indiana University School of Medicine as an associate professor and senior research scientist in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics where pioneering work for the development of echocardiography, breast ultrasound imaging and prostate treatment with ultrasound was performed. Sanghvi worked with Prof. F. J. Fry and developed the first clinical HIFU ultrasound image guided device for the treatment of brain cancer in 1972 that was used for the treatment of Glioblastoma.  He served as a Chief visiting scientist at Hitachi Central Research Laboratories, Tokyo, Japan from 1989-1990. Sanghvi holds 21 patents in systems, transducer design and process and has several pending patents. Sanghvi is a member and fellow in the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the Acoustical Society of America and the International Society of Therapeutic Ultrasound. His special interest is in Bioeffects of Ultrasound and Technical Standards. He also serves the National Institute of Health (NIH) as a scientific reviewer and invited peer reviewer for several medical and engineering journals. He has been a principal investigator for numerous NIH-NCI and U.S. ARMY sponsored research programs for the development of advanced ultrasound-based systems for imaging and treatment. Additionally, Sanghvi has been invited to be a guest lecturer by both academic and private organizations at meeting in China, Japan, India and countries throughout Europe.
