The Sonablate® Procedure

Sonablate is a medical device designed for precise ablation of prostate tissue using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) energy. Sonablate captures real-time images of the prostate gland, allowing the physician to create a customized ablation plan for each patient. The physician then uses Sonablate to deliver ablative ultrasound energy to targeted areas in the prostate gland.

The HIFU procedure typically lasts between 2-4 hours, depending on the size of the prostate, and is either done under general anesthesia or an epidural and IV sedation. During the procedure a suprapubic catheter may be put in place to help with urination, and will stay in place for 2-3 weeks. After the HIFU procedure, patients can expect to be in recovery for about 2-4 hours.

While it is recommended for patients to take things easy, most patients feel well enough to enjoy mild activities the evening after their procedure, such as going out to dinner or taking a walk.
