Patients will need to complete their bowel prep per their MD’s instruction. This is comparable to a prostate biopsy bowel prep.
Patients will typically be asked to arrive at the treatment facility at least an hour before the procedure.
A typical HIFU procedure lasts between 2-4 hours (depending on the size of the prostate) and is either done under general anesthesia or an epidural and IV sedation. During the procedure a catheter will be put in place to help with urination, and will stay in place until the physician is confident it is no longer needed.
After the HIFU procedure, patients can expect to be in recovery for about 1-2 hours, prior to leaving the treatment facility.
While it is recommended for patients to take things easy, most patients feel well enough to enjoy mild activities the same evening as their procedure, such as going out to dinner or taking a walk.
No overnight hospital stay is required.
